Self-guided tour of the museum. Exhibition "In Our Nets":
At the end of the 19th century, the museum was established in the Saint-Brieuc City Hall. Sailors’ figures welcome visitors amidst the sculptures in front of the monumental staircase in the winter garden. The "Sea Plunderer" or the "Sea Wolf" illustrate artists’ fascination with these men of the sea, to whom the Romantic gaze attributes strength and ruggedness.
For this season, the Saint-Brieuc Museum has accepted the Orsay Museum’s invitation to select works that “tell the story of work”while preserving the distinct character of its collections, which are partly Breton and maritime.
The figure of the fisherman is thus the starting point for a journey exploring how artists, museums, writers, and ethnologists have viewed and represented it, from the late 19th century to the present day.
