L'anse du Kernic currently covers more than 250 hectares and, despite belonging to the Domaine Maritime, is nonetheless an essential part of Plouescat's natural heritage. The Bay, which is part of the Natura 2000 network, enjoys a high level of biodiversity and is also a stopover site for migratory birds. Spoonbills, egrets, Belon's shelduck, sandpipers, curlews, gravel pebbles with interrupted collars take advantage of this vast expanse to land and rest. Its floristic richness is just as remarkable with several emblematic species: the pyramidal orchid, the dune bindweed, the glasswort....
A flat, large area of sand, this area and its surroundings have been used by man for various purposes since the Neolithic period.
The covered walkway of Guinirvit (collective burial), of which only the skeleton remains, bears witness to the presence of man on the site 5000 years ago. Immersed at high tide, the covered walkway, which was originally built on land, is a valuable indicator of the rising sea level. It is estimated that it has risen by 7 or 8 metres since that time.
More recently, from 1934 until the German occupation, it was used as an airfield, receiving brilliant aerial manifestations and even implying the creation of a flying school.
Today, if certain practices have been preserved, and give rise every year to magical shows, man and animal share this magnificent site in good harmony. Quiet areas have been created for birds and sports activities, such as kite-surfing and sand yachting, limited in space.
A postcard landscape, the bay offers an exceptional panorama that changes with the tides. The luminosity that bathes it throughout the day and in all seasons, the turquoise colour of its waters give it, here and there, the allure of a faraway and exotic destination. Some amateurs will invite you to discover it from the Dunes de Keremma for an overall view, others will preferably indicate the viewpoint from the Pointe de Pen an Théven in Plouesct for a glimpse from the Narrows...bordered by the GR34 the hiker will have plenty of time to observe and marvel over several kilometres.
