Background
Rigoletto is an opera in three acts, premiered on March 11, 1851, at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. It is based on Victor Hugo’s play “Le roi s’amuse,” but was adapted to circumvent the censorship of the time. The story takes place at the court of Mantua, where Rigoletto, the Duke’s jester, shields his daughter Gilda from the dangers of the world.
The opera begins with Rigoletto mocking the nobles at court. A former nobleman, Monterone, comes to demand justice for his daughter’s honor, as she has been seduced by the Duke of Mantua. Monterone curses Rigoletto, which terrifies him.
Rigoletto jealously protects his daughter Gilda, keeping her away from the courtiers. However, Gilda falls in love with the Duke, who is posing as a student. When she is abducted by the courtiers, a furious Rigoletto hires a hitman, Sparafucile, to assassinate the Duke.
In a tragic twist, Gilda—who remains in love with the Duke despite his infidelity—steps in to take her lover’s place to save him. She is killed in the Duke’s place, and Rigoletto discovers his daughter’s body with horror, thus realizing the full extent of the curse that weighs upon him.

Rigoletto explores profound themes such as revenge, paternal love, and the tragic consequences of human actions. The opera also highlights social tensions and the status of women in the 19th century, offering a critique of the society of the time.

This opera is considered one of Verdi’s masterpieces, combining poignant melodies and intense drama, and it remains a cornerstone of the international opera repertoire.
