À propos
Built in 1417 by Count Burghard and rebuilt in 1885 in neo-Gothic style, the Church of the Assumption features a series of tempera paintings on the intrados of its vaults. After being covered with whitewash and then forgotten during the 16th century, they were brought back to light in 1864.
Restored in 1967 and classified as a historic monument, these frescoes, which are among the oldest in eastern France, depict episodes from biblical life, including the crowning of the Virgin Mary, the church's patron saint.
The church also features tombstones of the Counts of La Petite-Pierre.
A regional speciality: this church has been a simultanéum, alternating Protestant and Catholic services, since 1737.
The church is open to the public all year round. Weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for special events and ceremonies.
