At the beginning of 1941 in Chad, a motorized column of Free Frenchmen with extremely modest military means, under the orders of General Leclerc, set out to conquer a fort occupied by the Italian army in Libya near the oasis of Koufra. After fierce fighting and the surrender of the Italians on March 2, General Leclerc swore an oath that he and his men would not stop until the tricolor flag was flown again over Strasbourg. Three years later, his armored division fought the violent battles in Lorraine to liberate Strasbourg.
The Free French were joined by soldiers of the African Army, escapees from France through Spain, French from North Africa, Spanish Republicans, volunteers of all religions and political opinions to form the 2nd Armored Division (2nd DB).
The milestones called "Oath of Koufra". traces the path taken by the 2nd Armored Division (La Voie de la 2e DB), during the Liberation of France in 1944. The project was initiated in 2004 by the commune of Saint Martin de Varreville in the Manche where the 2nd armored division landed in August 1944 at Utah Beach. The Fondation maréchal Leclerc de Hauteclocque then created the 2nd armored division road.
