A VODOU COLLECTION UNIQUE IN THE WORLD, AN UNUSUAL MUSEUM
The Château Vodou is an unusual private museum, presenting the world?s largest collection of West African vodou objects.
Housed in an exceptional setting, an 1878 water tower, it is managed by an association.
Vodou is a religion that encompasses a vast array of practices, rituals and beliefs. It originated in West Africa, more specifically in the ancient kingdom of Dahomey. It took its present form around the 17th century.
It provides a framework for key moments in life (births, unions, deaths), but also aims to heal illnesses. It aims to maintain harmony between the visible, earthly world of nature, and the invisible world of divinities and ancestors, through divination of the Fa, ceremonies and cult objects.
All the objects on display were used in religious practices. The collection of over 1400 objects belongs to the museum's founders: Marc and Marie Luce Arbogast.
Come to Strasbourg and meet Hebiéso (divinity of lightning), Mami Wata (goddess of the ocean), Aguin (genius of the bush) and all the other figures of the Vodou pantheon.
New temporary exhibition every year.
