Le parc de la Citadelle

Designed by Vauban after the surrender of Strasbourg (1681), the citadel was mainly focused on the defence of the Rhine bridge. Before it was dismantled following the bombing of the city and its annexation to the Second German Reich (1871), it had a regular pentagonal plan, bastioned at its corners. The park-and-promenade set up on its remains combines with the picturesque architecture, the water in the ditches and the vegetation.
