À propos
The last witness to the intense Jewish life in medieval Strasbourg, this mikveh was rediscovered in 1984 during rehabilitation work. Of this bath used for ritual purification, a small cellar of about 9 m2 remains, with a basin in the centre that can hold up to 500 litres directly from the water table, to which hot water was added. The walls have niches for candles and a small adjoining room was used as a cloakroom. Probably built between 1200 and 1260, it is one of the oldest vestiges of Jewish architecture in Alsace and the only Jewish building from the Middle Ages in Strasbourg that has survived.
A private guided tour can be offered on request. It retraces the little known and fascinating history of Alsatian Judaism since the Middle Ages.
