Ancienne commanderie de St Jean

At the end of the 12th century, the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, or Johanites, founded the first hospital. Taken to task by the local clergy, who saw it as a form of competition, the Knights of Saint John did not end up imposing themselves until after Pope Gregory IX supported their order in 1227. The church was consecrated in 1268 by Albert the Great, a Dominican theologian. The former commandery of St. John was sold in 1796 and went into decline from 1530 onwards. Bought back in 1858 by the Sisters of Divine Providence of Ribeauvillé, it was transformed into a school, still present, which took the name Institut Saint-Jean in 1918. Following refurbishment in the 19th century, only a few façade elements remain from the original building.
