À propos
Since the 10th century, the priory of Saint-Pierre, owned by the Swiss Benedictine abbey of Payerne, has stood on the site of the Oberhof, one of the original nuclei of Colmar. A Romanesque church with two towers, visible on the oldest views of Colmar, was built here in the 12th century, before being replaced by the Jesuit chapel. The latter was built between 1742 and 1750 by Strasbourg architect Jean-Paul Sarger, who reused stones from the city fortifications dismantled in 1673. The sobriety of the building is enhanced by stucco decoration.
Before being entrusted to the Jesuits in 1698, the chapel was used by Colmar's Protestant community from 1658 to 1679. With the departure of the Society of Jesus in 1765, the chapel became that of the Royal College, which succeeded the Jesuit College.
