Too cramped in its premises at the Hôtel de l'Abbaye de Pairis (now the town hall), where it had been located since its origin in 1800, the Haut-Rhin prefecture began the construction of its new building in 1862. This one, built on the same model as the Prefecture of Haute-Marne, was inaugurated in 1866. In the Louis XIII style, the building consists of a central building framed by two side wings.
It hosted the German administration during the German annexation of the region, before the prefecture of the Upper Rhine relocated there in 1918. Destroyed by a fire in 1938, the prefecture's hotel was bombed in 1940, then again suffered damage during the fighting for the liberation of Colmar. The prefecture faces the Champ de Mars pleasure park, the layout of which is reminiscent of the Legion of Honour cross.
