In a beautiful clearing that invites to meditation, we discover the chapel of the Schaefertal "Val du Pâtre". The inhabitants of the surrounding villages used to come here in procession and the nobles of the valley found it a privileged place for their ceremonies.
The chapel was erected on the spot where the Virgin Mary came to the aid of a shepherd during a drought that threatened his flock. In front of the porch, we can still see the miraculous spring flowing. Since 1272, the beneficial waters of Soultzmatt have been mentioned and the Lisbeth, the most famous of them, is still bottled in the valley today
Inside the chapel, there is a Renaissance statue of the Virgin and Child, a painting telling the miraculous story, and the charter commemorating the reconsecration of the chapel by the Bishop of Basel in 1511. Outside, the Stations of the Cross, erected in 1778 by pious winegrowers, follows the route of the Way of Saint James of Compostela. It takes us close to the Romanian military cemetery and the Langenstein "Long Stone". Legend has it that women dressed in white gather there to dance on full moon nights. Further on, the Grosser Fels ("Great Rock") offers us a magnificent view of the vineyard.
