Corps de garde de l'évêché
À propos
Until the French Revolution, the ramparts of Langres were constantly guarded by the inhabitants themselves. Every inhabitant of Langres aged 15 or over was enrolled in a neighborhood militia, and guarded the ramparts on a daily basis.

To provide shelter and warmth during their rounds, the factional guards had at their disposal a guardhouse, often with a chimney. Overhanging the rampart, they could also watch over the base and immediate accesses. Facing the former episcopal palace, this guardhouse compensated somewhat for the absence of flanking works in this part of the enclosure.
