À propos
The house of Didier-Pierre Diderot (the philosopher's younger brother), number 5, on the edge of Place Jeanne-Mance, is a canonical residence built in the heart of a neighborhood originally reserved for clerics. On January 7, 1767, Didier-Pierre became a canon of the cathedral and bought a house in the neighborhood. At that time, the building was much larger, and most of the outbuildings have now disappeared or been integrated into other plots. It was originally a private mansion, built between courtyard and garden, separated from the street by a gate and an enclosing wall. A Latin inscription: Cum Bona Spe "with good hope" surmounts the front door. Didier-Pierre's exchanges with his brother Denis were conflictual, the two brothers holding radically opposed views, particularly on religion.
