Château Stanislas

Of the fortress of the damsels of Commercy, only elements of the outer enclosure remain, reused at the end of the 17th century as the foundation of a princely residence. The works were launched by the Cardinal of Retz, the last damsel, exiled on his lands of Commercy by Louis XIV. It was here that he wrote the "Memoirs" that made him famous. The Prince of Vaudémont is the true creator of the Château de Commercy. Familiar with the Duke of Orleans, he called upon his architects, Germain Boffrand and Nicolas Dorbay, who gave it its present appearance and imagined its urban extension, the Fer à Cheval and the Avenue Stanislas. The King of Poland added the two low wings, designed by Emmanuel Heré.
