The first Saint Paul's Abbey was built in the 10th century outside the ramparts, on the spot where the 6th Bishop of Verdun, Paul, was buried.
Destroyed in the 13th century by the Verdun bourgeoisie in anger against their bishop, then demolished in 1552 by order of the King of France, it was rebuilt on the present site around 1560, then rebuilt for the third time in the 18th century. The Sub-Prefecture and the Court of Verdun currently share the premises of the former abbey.
PLEASE NOTE: the Procurator's Office of the Abbey of Saint Paul has become the Hotel de la Cloche d'Or.
