La statue du Volontaire

Created in 1899 by sculptor Paul-François Choppin, this statue pays tribute to the courage and civic-mindedness of the people of the Remiremont district. In 1792, they were among the first to send volunteers to defend their country in danger.

Now the emblem of the town, it stands proudly at the intersection of rue Charles-de-Gaulle and rue de la Xavée. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1996, the statue and its base bear two inscriptions: "Un volontaire de 1792", in tribute to these anonymous heroes, and "Don de l'État 1899", recalling its origin.
