À propos
Fort de l'île Pelée is one of the forts and dikes forming Cherbourg's large harbor. Built in the 18th century, it was first called a "royal fort", then a "national fort", before taking the name of the island on which it is located. In the 19th century, it was linked to the coast by a dike, with a pass through which boats could pass. A port was also built.
Defending the eastern entrance to the large harbor, it was once used as a prison and was occupied by the German army during the Second World War.
