First appearing in Villedieu-les-Poêles in the 18th century, lacemaking underwent major expansion in the 19th century. In 1850, this little-known craft employed around 600 women and girls, often the wives and daughters of poesliers. Typical motifs are roses, clovers and daisies. The work is carried out on a loom, equipped with a card reproducing the motif to be created, and the work is carried out using spindles, also specific to Villedieu. This know-how is still very much alive: located in the Maison du Patrimoine Sourdin, the Lace School, run by Maryline Lebois, is a growing success.
