Pheasant Island (or Conference Island) is a small island (3,000 m²), in the middle of the Bidasoa, border between France and Spain.
In 1659, the marriage of Louis XIV with the daughter of King Philip IV was negotiated there in a conference that lasted three months, between Cardinal Mazarin and Don Luis de Haro: the peace treaty known as the Pyrenees was signed.
Since the Treaty of the Pyrenees, the islet is a condominium (divided co-ownership) under the authority of France and Spain, changing every 6 months.
The island can no longer be visited today but can be easily observed from the Joncaux shoreline, located on the Chemin de la Baie.
