La chapelle Saint-Nicolas

Located in Ottrott-le-Bas, it was built in the 12th century by the parents of Gertrude de Rathsamhausen and was restored about ten years ago. It is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1227, when the nobles of Rathsamhausen gave it to the abbey of Niedermunster.
In 1622, during the Thirty Years War, it was partially destroyed but rebuilt the following year.
The present bell tower dates from the end of the 18th century or the very beginning of the 19th century. Although it is later than the chapel, it is harmoniously integrated into the building, both by its proportions and by its shape. In order to limit its weight, its structure is entirely made of half-timbering
A tribune is built in the nave, which could date from the beginning of the 19th century. It is accessible by an external wooden staircase sheltered by a canopy, visible on an engraving of 1836. Two remarkable wooden statues are preserved in the chapel: a Virgin and Child from around 1320, which is one of the oldest Madonnas in Alsace, and an 18th century Saint-Nicolas.
