Built in 1202 by Lord Gui de Dampierre, the church served as an observation post and defense post for the town during the siege of 1544.
In 1634, four cannonballs were sealed into the top of the tower to commemorate its important role in the battle.
The church was ravaged by fire in 1775 and rebuilt in the classical style. The only remains of the 13th-century edifice still visible today are the tower, the portal and the Chapelle du Sépulcre, which houses a 16th-century entombment.
The interior of the church is packed with special features, including an organ case inaugurated by Camille Saint-Saëns and perfected by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, a cast-iron crucifix, 15th and 16th century statuary?
