À propos
Situated at the crossroads of numerous communication routes, particularly by river with the Rhine, the Ill and the Bruche, Strasbourg became an important European commercial transit centre in the 12th century, requiring port facilities.
In 1358, it was decided to build a vast warehouse with a resale counter for the products to be taxed.
The customs depot is enlarged and completed until the 18th century.
To the west of the building, near the Saint Nicholas Bridge, a vast landing stage was installed in 1393, including two monumental cranes that disappeared in 1865.
Ravaged during the 1944 bombings, the building was rebuilt in the early 1960s.
The reconstruction, which eliminates the additions of later centuries, gives the building back its medieval silhouette.
