An afternoon of discovery: a wine tasting in Queen Jeanne’s Gothic cellar, a tour of the Vine and Wine Museum at Château Pécauld, and an insight into the private life of Louis Pasteur at his family home.
La Cabiotte offers you a full day in Arbois, France’s first AOC and the historic capital of Jura wines, combining wine-growing heritage with scientific discovery.
The day begins with a wine tasting at the Cave de la Reine Jeanne, a place steeped in history: this Gothic-style cellar, the only one of its kind in Arbois and listed as a Historic Monument, was built in 1322 by Jeanne, one of the daughters of the Dukes of Burgundy who went on to become Queen of France. Here, you can taste Jura wines in a truly exceptional medieval setting.
Next, we head to the Jura Vine and Wine Museum, housed since 1993 in Château Pécauld, a restored building dating from the 13th to the 18th century. The tour begins outside, amongst the reconstructed vineyards surrounding the château, before continuing into the cellars and exhibition rooms of the museum, where the various winemaking methods are showcased, along with the history and traditions of the Jura wine-growing world (vin jaune, vin de paille, Macvin, etc.).
The afternoon concludes with a visit to the Maison de Louis Pasteur, a unique heritage site to which the famous scientist returned every year. The house has been preserved in its original state: the furniture, décor, billiard table and restored laboratory offer a moving insight into the private life and work of the scientist, who invented the rabies vaccine and pasteurisation.
A rich and varied day, combining the pleasures of wine, wine-growing heritage and a leading figure in science, in the heart of a village that has retained its charm.
Good to know: tours and tastings at the Cave de la Reine Jeanne are free for groups, subject to booking. The Maison de Louis Pasteur offers guided tours at fixed times; booking is recommended. A ‘Découverte Arbois’ combined ticket is available, allowing you to visit the Maison Pasteur, the Museum of Vines and Wine, and the Sarret de Grozon Museum at a preferential rate.
