Built from 1839 to 1842 on the site of an old farm, the synagogue of Colmar is the seat of the Israelite Consistory and the Chief Rabbinate of the Upper Rhine.
The presence of the Jewish community in the city is attested since the 13th century. Expelled in the 16th century, the Jewish community returned to Colmar at the time of the Revolution where it has an oratory set up in the old ploughmen's stove to practice its cult. It filed a construction file as early as 1814, while the rabbinate was transferred from Wintzenheim to Colmar in 1823. The construction of the building then begins in 1839, in the antiquarian style of the first half of the 19th century.
The Colmar synagogue was renovated in 1885 and an annex was added in 1936. Transformed into a sales room and then an arsenal during the German occupation, it was restored again after the war. It is the only synagogue in the region to have a bell tower.
